What is Wokwi?

Wokwi is an online electronics simulator created by Uri Shaked that runs real firmware for popular microcontrollers directly in the browser: Arduino Uno/Mega/Nano, a wide range of ESP32 boards, STM32 and Raspberry Pi Pico, plus hundreds of parts, displays and sensors (I2C/SPI displays, LEDs, motors, NeoPixels, DHT sensors and more). It supports the normal toolchains (Arduino, ESP-IDF, MicroPython, Rust, PlatformIO), simulates virtual Wi-Fi and networking for IoT projects, offers a logic analyzer, serial monitor and GDB debugging, multiplayer collaboration and shareable project links, a VS Code extension, and — through a Tiny Tapeout collaboration — can even turn a digital design into a real fabricated chip. Public projects are free, while Wokwi Club adds private projects and extra features, making it the go-to next step after beginner tools like Tinkercad.

Pros

  • No hardware or install — prototype firmware instantly in the browser.
  • Broadest board/part coverage among online MCU simulators.
  • Real debugging with GDB, logic analyzer and virtual Wi-Fi.
  • Great for remote work, teaching and CI without physical boards.
  • Shareable links make help and tutorials reproducible.

Cons

  • Analog and some exotic peripherals are approximated, not SPICE-accurate.
  • Private projects and some perks need Wokwi Club.
  • Has a learning curve compared with block-based beginner tools.
  • Timing-sensitive/low-level hardware behavior may differ from real chips.
